Materials and Cold-Storage Considerations
Material choice deserves extra care. Standard paperboard should not automatically be treated as freezer-ready or moisture-resistant simply because it can be printed into an attractive box.
The correct material depends on how the package is used. Secondary packaging around sealed containers may have different requirements from a box exposed directly to a freezer environment. Cone carriers used briefly at a counter are also different from cartons that spend long periods in cold storage.
When discussing the project, explain the expected temperature, moisture or condensation exposure, handling time, and whether the food will touch the packaging. The packaging team can then consider an appropriate board, coating, liner, or structural solution for that use.
Food-contact suitability also depends on the material, coating, ink, liner, and finish and should be confirmed for the intended product.
